Splurge or Save: Skin Care Edition

Step One (11)

Makeup Remover

Duh. You knew that I’m sure. I’m just making sure because there are options out there for you to spend over $50 just to remove your makeup! No way Jose! The Simple Micellar wipes are the easiest and most gentle way I’ve found to remove makeup.

Simple Micellar Make-up Removing Wipes $7

I always tell people that if you want or need to save some cash in the skin care department your first switch to drugstore should be your cleanser. Just pick out a simple, gentle cleanser that caters to your skin type and effectively cleanses your skin leaving no makeup residue.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser $8

A toner’s job depends on your needs. If you have a specific skin concern this could be another opportunity to introduce beneficial ingredients to target your concern and all of this can be done on a budget! If your pH levels aren’t balanced this is also the time to use a pH balancing toner to help the situation. Take this quiz to see if your skin pH levels are off. I love the results I’ve seen from the Pixi Glow Tonic containing Glycolic acid, great for acne and anti-aging.

Long story short, the molecular structure in MOST moisturizers is too large to penetrate deeply into your skin anyways so you’re better off saving your bucks in this department and spending them elsewhere. Be sure your moisturizer coordinates with your skin type and if using during the day, get one with SPF! This Simple lotion is also formulated without SPF for night time.

Step One (12)

We’re going to talk about molecular structures again! (skin care nerd) This is where you are going to get the most dramatic difference between high and low end skin care products. It’s simply not possible for a lower end product to have the technology of the higher end. High end skin care, when developed correctly, have tiny molecules and “carrying agents” to bring those tiny molecules of skin care goodness down deep into your skin. The deeper the product penetrates into your skin the more effective it will be.

Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Face Serum $55

Eye Cream

This one is a no brainer I’m sure. The thinnest skin you have on your face and the fastest to age requires the heaviest of duty products. The REN Beauty Shot Eye Lift actually makes the skin around my eyes tighten!

Treatment Masks

Since you only leave a mask on for 5-30 minutes it seems like maybe you should be able to save on this one, but it’s actually quite the opposite! Because you only leave this product on for a limited time you want the ingredients in your product to be effective, concentrated and potent! There just simply isn’t a drugstore alternative (that I have found) that been able to replicate the effects of my higher end treatment masks. ExfoliKate is the BEST quick exfoliating treatment around!

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment $24-$85

Remember, you are the only one who knows your budget and if you’d rather not splurge (or save for that matter) then you don’t have to. I’m sure with a little investigation you will be able to find your perfect skin care regime at a price that works for you! As always thanks so much for reading. Let me know your fav skin care products in the comments!
